- Start by allowing hesitant/orally defensive children to explore the sensations on their hands and arms first before introducing oral stimulation.
- Use the ears as spoons! One ear has a smooth backside while the other has bumps for added tactile input. The bumpy ear can help introduce texture to puréed foods and encourage the transition to textured/regular food.
- Incorporate Mr. Mouse during mealtimes and feeding therapy to reduce food anxiety, normalize sensitivities, and decrease oral aversions.
- Practice jaw grading and stability with the various heights of the tip. Have the child bite the ears, side of the face, or bite block on the back of the tip to gauge how far they should open their mouth.
